    Kayaking the West Coast Trail

Sorry, I was meaning the internal forum search engine. Seems to drop West and Coast. I can't seem to get it to search for a phrase. I would have to call the Trail office and query them directly on the requirement to pay, or not, for camping. I would hate to pull to say, Camper, and have the...

    ROC exam for VHF use

Regardless if you test or not, I would suggest getting access to a VHF, turn it to 16, and listen in. Follow the converstations around as they bounce from channel to channel. You will get some working knowledge of how communications actually go.

Help! I need advice on moorage in Vancouver / Richmond

I'm not sure if you are doing camping-on-the-beach, or what you accomadations are, but I believe in Canada, unlike the the US, everything up to the high-tide line is Crown land, meaning it is public access. In otherwords, the rich mansions on the waterfront don't own the beach. Now I am not...

    ROC exam for VHF use

In an emergency situation, I would use the radio regardless of the repercussions. On that note, a jerk of a Coast Guard officer may very well fine you if you have a VHF on you while paddling, but no card. In reality, I seriously doubt they would much care. So long as you aren't burping into...

Cook your dinner and charge your phone -- with a wood stove!

Re: Cook your dinner and charge your phone -- with a wood st I've been wondering when someone would do something like this, getting electricity from a fire. I was thinking a simpler, and possibly more interesting device would be a heating coil you simply tosses into a campfire, which as it is...

    New island speed record

Of course, if this fellow was using a rowboat, then the sea kayak record would stand regardless. Good on him. Getting yourself around the island, in such a short period of time, in a human powered craft, is an accomplishment. Grats!

    Bowron Lakes, June 1-8 2011

Nice pics. I did the Bowron around this time last year. Great place. I would definitely go again. And take my kayak this time. Things I learned from the trip, - Wake up early, paddle early. - The weather always seems great in the mornings, and crappy in the afternoon. Might as well be...

What would you like to see in the future of sea kayaking?

Re: What would you like to see in the future of sea kayaking Hatches that are huge, structurally strong, open very easily, stay very secure (lockable even), and are always 100% watertight. Industry standard theft prevention system (a small diamter tube running through the kayak, side to side...

    US Kayak fatalities

So if you are between 40-60, you are likely to die from hypothermia because you were not wearing your PFD, and paddling in waters out of your actual skill level.

Garmin announces new eTrex series GPS units

I have always ignored the altimiter readings in little devices like this. They are always so wildly inaccurate that they become meaningless. Besides, unless I am flying in a plane, I have never had any real need to determine my altitude. Especially if I am floating on the ocean.

Garmin announces new eTrex series GPS units

Since you seem to be up on the topic, how would the new eTrex series stack up against something like their new GPSMAP 78 series, especially when it comes to kayaking? I own an old eTrex Vista (pre H even). It has worked well enough for hiking, driving, kayaking, but I do realize it is getting...

    Good sleeping pad

I have used therarests, and current use either a Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Mummy for lightweight/size, or a first generation Exped 9. Both are fantastic. I don't think I can go back to uncomfy paper-thin foam pads ever again. For the record, I do have a random deflation issues with the Big...

What is in their mind? -fast lead paddler on the trip.

I will admit, I have been the fast paddler on a few trips. I will say that there was nothing nerfarious about it. I just happened to paddle a little faster than everyone else. A little extra speed, over a long period of time, means a good amount of extra distance between us. Of course, when...
