Come celebrate the 10th WCP Spring Campout!

IMPORTANT NOTE: This event is organized and promoted by the members of this website. WestCoastPaddler.com only facilitates the discussion and in no way sponsors this event. Paddling conditions at this time of year can be nasty -- you are responsible for getting to this event, and for getting yourself home. To attend this event you should be a self-sufficient paddler and be able to look after yourself while traveling and camping.

It's that time of the year again to start thinking about the Spring Campout. As was decided a few years ago (thanks SheilaP) the campout is held on the last weekend of April at the Arbutus Campsite on Portland Island.

This is a get-together of interested paddlers who meet each year with the intent of starting off the camping season.

Traditionally, there is a potluck dinner on the Saturday evening so please indicate what you will be bringing for the dinner so that we're not all eating nothing but chocolate cake.

    Dates are:
    [strike]April 25 and 26, 2015[/strike]
June 12-14 <-- Note new date!

    Location:
The Arbutus Campsite on Portland Island, in the Gulf Islands.

Put some names to faces, have some good food, and enjoy a great time!

    Who's going?

What, chocolate cake? I reserve the right to a big slice. Any sprinkles?

Hmm, so far looks like I get half . . . and you get 2 loaves of garlic bread.

Garlic bread's nothing without pasta. So I can bring the family-size can of Chef Boyardi Ravioli. Or make my veggie pasta stir fry. What would folks prefer?

Hey Dan, if Maddie is back from her Most Excellent Nordic Adventure, and will attend, I will try to convince Alexa to come along.

Gary, that would be very cool. Maddie isn't quite sure if she's going to be able to make it just yet as she's off to Singapore the following week, representing SFU in an international business competition. She won't know for sure if she'll be at the campout this year until a week or two before -- she's hoping to be there (and could probably use the break). Her boyfriend will be coming to the campout though (he was there a couple of years ago).

So, if I make it, we will be 6, by my count. My plan is to attend, but still up in the air just yet.
If I do , it will be just Saturday am to Sunday, launching from Amherst beach I assume, any other islanders going my way that morning? PM me..maybe we can car pool etc..Sheila?
So besides the body count, what is the food count?!?
Philip bringing his famous stir fry.
Me, corn bread and chili, I hope..
Dan and Sheila, yer not just bringing yer appetites!
Plus Mick and greg0rn, watcha brining? hum...slim pickins so far..
Any more takers on the trip?
Lot of room for more bodies.

Dan, I assume you are bringing the Pavilion?

Maddie nor her boyfriend will be coming. I will be there and will be bringing the Pavilion tarp.

Not sure what I'm bringing to the potluck -- are there enough coming to have a potluck?

I plan on coming. My potluck faire will match the weather conditions. :)

Anyone coming on the Thursday for an extended adventure?

Life events permitting, I'll be there on Thursday to help set up the tarp and do quality assurance on the beer before the Saturday feast.

Gary, I finally looked at your recipe...
    Squirrel canapes also?
Really, a raccoon only feeds 4?
I assume you will not be buying a tik for the Wild ARC raffle from me?
I like my little bandits alive...

I believe the traditional recipe in the SE US runs to stewed raccoon. Placed well downwind, noseplugs provided with each serving.

    Hey Rodnak

The raccoons of Portland are legend for their brazen forays seeking tastey human food.
Even if I wanted to, I think I'd have some difficulty taking one down with my Canon 50D.

    The recipe was a joke.

We're just looking over maps and stuff, tentatively planning a Friday afternoon arrival from somewhere in the Arthritis Ridge area (south-east of Duncan). We haven't done a trip yet this year - not even a day paddle - but if the weather is good we'll probably be there. I won't be bringing the fishing kayak, but maybe I'll fire up the smoker in the next few days and bring some evidence of its usefulness as a little appetizer. Am I missing something, or is it looking like a pretty small group this year?

    Re: 2015 WCP Spring Campout

Just looking for a little insight. I am thinking about launch from Amherst beach in Sidney to head to Portland. Tides are high at 9:17, and go to low at 16:33. I assume if I leave at 9ish, and take inside of Coal Island, the currents should not be too bad?
Just looking for any Islander insight, have not gone that way yet from Amherst, when I did go out to the Little Group last summer, there was a bit of fun current, nothing too drastic, but I prefer not to paddle against that, or worse through west side of Coal Island.
Anyhow, long winded, just need anyone's take on that route vis a vis currents. I will be solo, if I do get the time... dicey just yet, work is 110% of my life just now...hmmm maybe I need a kayak trip? Anyhow...
