No, I haven't done that yet. Although, the idea is whispering to me to try.

Another benefit of building your own paddle is the ability to fine tune the paddle after you have made and used it for a while. I've found that there is always something. I have made a few paddles in different 'gears'. Narrow blade, small gear; wider blade, higher gear. It's a pleasure to...

I've used a carbon greenland paddle in the past (not Gearlab). It was the first GP I owned. I enjoyed using it. I have also made a few of my own greenland paddles at home from western red Cedar. I have to say that I enjoy the feel of the natural wood in my hands more than the stiff carbon. The...

does the loose load cause problems shifting in rough water or if you do a roll

Ugh, yeah, that Nalgene water bottle rolling around in the hatch. Very annoying. Lol I've never noticed any stability issue.

Catastrophic failure — which is worse

Good point. Something to think now, but I didnt before when paddling consecutive days from home, leaving the kayak on the roof, and it pours down overnight. My end result was, fortunately, only a wet arm and shoulder as I unloaded the next morning.

    Secret intelligence of water

Veda Austin's work with water is absolutely amazing. You need to have some curiosity and an open mind about our relationship with water to deepen the understanding of life. Veda says "No water, No life; Know water, Know life"

    Which pfd?

the purpose of a pfd is to keep you afloat, not to store stuff. I'd select the better fit.

Greenland kayaks and the Greenlandic inspired designs most often require legs flat on the hull rather than 'frog legged' . This requires good hamstring flexibility.

    Greenland kayaking

Low volume greenland kayaks are a lot of fun to paddle and roll. I found out that I needed to train to be able to paddle for any length of time. yoga and stretching, and building Core strength. Find a skilled teacher for rolling. Once you have good techniques, those low volume sof kayaks...

Seeking input on a new paddle...

This is what I love about the GP. I can relax while paddling! It seems the GP has a lower gear than euro paddles, and generally used at a lower angle. If I want to pick up the pace, I raise the angle slightly and increase the cadence. No problem at all to keep up with those 'going hard' using...

    WTB Nimbus Chinook paddle

Have you ever tried a Greenland Paddle? I suggest you try one out. There are some who use a GP and say it's easier on their shoulders.

Pain or discomfort in the hip area?

While paddling in a Greenland style kayak, yes, legs are mostly flat, but the thigh brace is very close to the thighs with body to kayak contact almost constant. There is very little movement needed to initiate a brace. This is not so with a typical north American style kayak where the legs are...

    Shoes news

Always seems if you want a quality product with good design, you gotta pay the bucks. I plan to move to a shoe like this. I've been using NRS paddle shoes for years now. They're so worn out and tattered I'm surprised they still stay on.
